First of all, let’s give a special shout-out to NYSC. They are the reason most Nigerian youths get to visit states they normally wouldn’t have. So, thank you, NYSC! Here are your flowers.💐
Now, if you were given $10,000 to visit any state(s) in Nigeria, where would you go?
You’re probably thinking about flying into Lagos and fantasizing about how you’re going to splash money in clubs and beaches like Asake but what if I told you there’s other interesting things to do and more interesting Nigerian cities to spend your time?
Think about how refreshed you would feel when you escape the hustle and bustle of Lagos and really live well.
Let’s check out a few of them.
- Port Harcourt

Rivers state is home to the award-winning, ovation-deserving bole and fish. Known by its indigenes as ‘Pitakwa’ and by all as PH, Port Harcourt is the capital city in Rivers State.
Nestled within the Niger Delta, this large city is set along the gushing Bonny River. PH was initially made up of several fishing villages, which were later developed into a port.
This beautiful city is a balance of modern city life on one side and serene coast on the other. It has the perfect blend of civilization and nature. Its white, sandy beaches and cool waters make it the perfect getaway location for beach lovers. If this is your scene, then check out Tourist Beach. The water there is great for swimming and there are tons of other fun activities for solo travellers, families and couples.

The Port Harcourt Cultural Centre is another great spot for lovers of culture. It offers displays of antiques, preserves and artefacts that would thrill art lovers. The Rivers State Museum is also worth a visit. If you love nature and photography enthusiasts, you would have a swell time at the Port Harcourt zoo.
- Calabar

Calabar is known as the tourism capital of Nigeria. Originally called Akwa Akpa and the Kingdom of Calabar, this beautiful capital city of Cross River exudes a quiet, rustic charm that is alluring to indigenes and guests alike. The existence of ancient British monuments gives it a sleek, white-marbled elegance that complements its entire aura.
Calabar is an excellent getaway location for nature lovers. You can start off with the extensive Cross River National Park and the Drill Rehabilitation Centre which was built to conserve endangered species of Drills. The breathtaking Kwa Waterfalls is also a must-see.
Calabar also boasts of several museums. From the Slave Museum which details the inhumane history of African slaves to the National Museum of Calabar, there’s so much to see, explore and learn.

Cross River is the home of exquisite cuisines and a colourful culture. Be sure to time your visit to coincide with the popular Calabar Festival that holds annually in December. Do well to check out one of the oldest churches in Nigeria while you’re there.
- Enugu

This list of interesting Nigerian cities won’t be complete without Enugu. Located in the southeastern region of Nigeria is a city enriched in Coal. Fondly referred to as 042 by its indigenes, the University of Nigeria is located in Enugu State.
The Udi hills are a prominent attraction site in the state. But it’s not the only one. Enugu is also host to stunning waterfalls, breath-taking hills, splendid plains and gorgeous valleys. If you’re looking to connect to Mother Nature, be sure to visit the Pine Forests in Enugu.

It is impossible to talk about Enugu and not mention the Awhum Waterfalls. It is nestled under ginormous walls of limestone and is made up of two cascading streams of natural falls that fall from different heights. The first fall is smaller and it intrudes the cave halfway from the entrance. The larger fall is found at the end of the path and is bracketed by thick forests which adds to its tropical beauty.
- Kaduna

Kaduna is one of the coolest states in the North Western region. The state got its name from the Kaduna River which flows along the city. Steeped in history, there are so many things to see and lots of places to visit.
Kaduna state has a zoo, parks, a waterfall, a golf course, and several stadiums. The Nok Village, including the ancient and impressive architectural works in Zaria are a must see for history lovers. It is also home to the ancient, yet exquisite Kajuru Castle.

Did you know that Kaduna is also referred to as the Croc City? No, not that kind of Crocs. I’m talking about the God-given Crocodiles. Yes, the River Kaduna boasts of a large population of crocodiles. It would be an amazing sight to visit these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat!
- Ibadan

If you like the soft life and enjoy good local meals then this should be your next location. The capital city of Oyo State in the south-western part of Nigeria is also known as the brown roof city. It is the third largest city in Nigeria. It is also one of Nigeria’s culturally richest cities and its balance of primitive beauty and modern developments lures tourists from far and wide.
Ibadan is home to two major resorts; IITA and Ilaji Resorts. These places promise a refreshing escape from the hustle and bustle of life. They have lots of activities such as bird watching, canoeing, lawn tennis and many more.

Agodi Gardens is also a great spot for nature lovers. It is a botanical garden that also offers lovely meals, horse-riding, swimming and many other fun activities.
The University of Ibadan Zoological Gardens also offers a variety of native animals for your viewing pleasure. Ibadan also boasts of many historical buildings and monuments such as Mapo Hall, Bowers Tower and many more.
And of course, we can’t talk about Ibadan without mentioning Amala. There’s no need to talk too much sef. You already know what to do.
Honourable Mention: Kogi

Kogi state is located in the Middle Belt region of Nigeria. Also known as the Confluence State, it is the meeting point of the River Niger and the River Benue.

Kogi is rich in history as the site of Lord Lugard’s resting house, office and residence. Kogi also has site attractions like the Confluence, Mount Patti, a game reserve, majestic palaces and a library. If you’re still underrating the beautiful sights in Kogi, then you’re sleeping on a bicycle.
For those of you wondering why Lagos and Abuja are not on this list, those 2 cities have more than enough PR already.
There are so many other charming places to visit in Nigeria and this list highlights only 5 of them. Take a chance. Be spontaneous and take a tour of these phenomenal cities.

I was curious if you ever considered changing the structure of your website?
Its very well written; I love what youve got to say.
But maybe you could a little more in the way of content so
people could connect with it better. Youve got an awful lot
of text for only having 1 or 2 images. Maybe you could space it
out better?
