Would you believe it if I told you that other than a bed of nails, there are even more strange places where people sleep?
I’m sure you know one or two people who could win an award for sleeping. I have a friend who falls asleep within seconds; meanwhile, some people will toss and turn for hours before we drift off. This life no balance.
If you’re like me (I identify as a sleepy millennial), then you should know about World Sleep Day. It is an annual event held on March 15th. Aimed at raising awareness about the importance of sleep, the day typically features events and activities that encourage people to prioritize their sleep and adopt healthy sleep habits.
So if you need an excuse to catch some extra Zzz’s, this is the day for you!
Enough rambling! Let’s get into some of the shocking places people love to sleep.
Sensory Deprivation Tanks
One of the strangest places people have been known to sleep is in a sensory deprivation tank. These tanks are filled with a salt solution that is so dense, you float on top of it.
The idea is to eliminate all external stimuli, so you can completely relax and enter a state of deep meditation. It is supposed to be incredibly calming and rejuvenating, but it definitely sounds a little creepy!
Hammocks over Waterfalls
Hammock camping, also known as “slacklining,” is a growing trend that involves hanging a hammock between two points, often in a natural setting. Some people have taken this to the extreme by hanging their hammocks over waterfalls! And falling asleep on it. Ha! My village people would never allow me to try this one.
Of course, it’s not for the faint of heart, as it requires some serious climbing skills and a high tolerance for heights. But the reward is the chance to wake up to the sound of rushing water and a view of the surrounding landscape. It’s definitely an adventure!
Treehouse in the Rainforest
Sleeping in a treehouse in the rainforest is a once-in-a-lifetime experience! There are a few places in the world where you can do this, like Costa Rica, Thailand, and Australia. If you can’t afford to travel to any of these countries, maybe you should try the evil forest in your village. All tree na tree, abi?
The treehouses are built high up in the canopy, where you can enjoy a bird’s-eye view of the lush jungle below. You can even wake up to the sounds of monkeys and birds in the trees. It’s like being immersed in a real-life nature documentary! Of course, it’s not for everyone – the treehouses are usually pretty rustic, with no electricity or running water.
But for some, the rustic conditions are part of the appeal! It’s an experience that is hard to replicate anywhere else. And for those who love nature and adventure, it’s definitely worth the effort.
Ice Hotels
There are a few of these hotels around the world, made entirely out of ice and snow. The rooms are kept at a constant temperature of -5 degrees Celsius, so you’ll need a thick sleeping bag and warm clothes.
The experience is unlike any other – you can sleep under the stars or the northern lights, if you’re fortunate (God when?), surrounded by sparkling ice sculptures. Definitely a one-of-a-kind experience! I mean, with the kind of heat in Lagos now, who wouldn’t want to spend a night here?
Ice hotels are usually located in areas with a cold climate, like northern Canada, Finland, or Sweden. They’re typically only open during the winter months, as they melt during the summer. But during the winter, they’re a unique and unforgettable place to stay.
Salt Hotels
How about sleeping in a hotel room made entirely of salt? (Lot’s wife would approve) It may sound surreal, but it’s a real thing! There are a few salt hotels around the world, like the Hotel de Sal Luna Salada in Bolivia.
The rooms are made entirely of salt blocks, and they even have salt furniture. The rooms are said to have health benefits, as the salt helps purify the air and has a calming effect. It’s definitely a unique experience!
Bubble Hotels
This is another of the unusual places people love to sleep is in a bubble hotel. These hotels are made up of transparent domes, which allow you to stargaze from the comfort of your bed.
There are a few of these hotels around the world, like the Bubble Hotel in France or the Manta Resort in Tanzania. It’s a great way to connect with nature and enjoy the beauty of the night sky.
And for the true stargazers, some bubble hotels even have telescopes so you can get a closer look at the stars. Doesn’t that sound amazing?
Cave Hotels
Sleep in a cave but make it five stars. What better way to prove that you’re a descendant of Neanderthals than by sleeping in a cave!
In fact, there are several hotels around the world that offer cave rooms, like the Cuevas Pedro Antonio de Alarcón in Spain or the Cappadocia Cave Hotel in Turkey. These rooms are usually carved into the rock, and they can be quite luxurious, with amenities like fireplaces and hot tubs. It is one of the unusual places people love to sleep.
Some people even say that the natural rock formations have a healing effect. Tap into your caveman ancestry and consider trying out this unique and relaxing experience today!
Have I sold you on the idea of sleeping in strange places yet?
Naysayers would say it is not their portion. Some of you are too serious. You need to relax. Maybe take a nap. You know what they say, Sleeping on the problem won’t make it go away, but it might help you solve it in your dreams.😜
So what are you doing for World Sleep Day?
