Sleep is meant to be a sweet escape from the harsh realities of life. However, if everyone around you complains about your sleeping habits or you find yourself justifying sleepiness during work. Then this is for you.
Yeah, we all know that sleep has numerous health benefits but the way you’re going about it, you might exhaust the benefits before the end of the month because how do you explain sleeping for over eight hours every night and you still squeeze in extra sleep at every given opportunity? Tolani, are you getting paid to sleep without sharing updates or you’re just warming up for a Sleep-a-thon?
Anyways, given the beef I have with people who enjoy sleeping a little too much and the ease with which they do it, here’s a list to help you know if you’re eligible to represent Nigeria in a Sleep-A-Thon/Sleep Olympics:
Sleeping in Public Places

Have you seen those people who shout “Amen” at odd times during a church service, the regular customers of the ushers at vigils? That person who can’t tolerate a moment of idleness while staying awake regardless of the number of hours they’ve spent in bed.
I mean why should any free time be spent on anything else apart from sleep? The way they love to sleep would often have you wondering what happened to their self control button. It would seem as though they get incentives from sleeping in public places like worship centers (mosques, churches), board meetings at work, weddings, funerals, etc. If this is you, then you should consider registering for a Sleep-A-Thon.
Always get driven past your bus stop

I have this family friend who constantly gets lost in Lagos because she sleeps in public vehicles till the driver goes past her destination and when she eventually wakes up and alights from the vehicle, she would start calling for directions. No one would blame you for sleeping in a public vehicle, especially in Lagos. What with the endless traffic and the current economic situation in the country. We’re all guilty of that but some people are extra, imagine sleeping in a commercial bus and snoring loudly or sleeping while standing in a BRT or even worse, sleeping so comfortably in a commercial bus till the driver gets to your destination, calls your attention to it but sleep is also driving you so you can’t hear the bus driver until you find yourself in a bus stop that’s different from yours. If you’re wondering how people lose stuff in a bus, sleep is one of the biggest contributing factors.
Take a quick snooze after every meal

If a meal is not complete without a quick snooze, you feel it’s your responsibility to sleep after every meal and if care is not taken your face might find its way into the plate as you doze off, drifting into a dreamy world where jollof rice flows like a river and your plastic spoon is the paddle with which you make your movement. Quickly send that email to the Guinness World Records team informing them of your interest in dethroning the current Sleep-A-Thon champion.
Sleeping whenever it gets dark

You sleep whenever you find yourself in an environment that is dark either day or night. To you darkness is soothing and provides you with the necessary sedative to sleep. If you are reading and it gets dark maybe because of a power outage, the next best thing is to take a quick snooze and continue later. Take it easy and finish what you started before sleep finishes you.
You always offer burnt offering

Your meals are always getting burnt because you always want to take a snooze before every meal is ready. You always feel that the time available can accommodate a quick snooze but a quick snooze is never a quick snooze because it always leads to a burnt meal or would I say a burnt offering. Sleeping like this is quite risky so that one doesn’t set the house ablaze.
Sleeping even if the world is falling
Nigerians have a love-hate relationship with generators. But for this group, generators are their lullabies. The hum of a diesel engine soothes them into slumber. They can sleep through any sound, the dog barking, the house shaking, a car honking etc. Whatever it is, they don’t care as long as they get their beauty sleep.
Yesterday was World Sleep Day and if you celebrated it along with the rest of the world, Congratulations! If you didn’t, well, it’s not too late to register for the sleep Olympics and shine the spotlight on Nigeria using your innate skill…lol
We all need to sleep but we can check how we sleep and when we sleep because it might be a form of procrastination or endangerment. This is except of course you would be leading in the next Sleep-A-Thon.
Join a community of supportive people on Fusion and let’s cheer you on in your endeavour to shine the Olympic torch on our nation…lol. Fusion is where all the fun happens, whether you’re looking to interact, transact or connect with people.
