A wise man once said, “Love is magical.” At least that’s how I feel after listening to these five Nigerians talk about their partners and the reason why their hearts still beat for them.

My husband has a heart of gold, very tender, compassionate and almost childlike enthusiasm for people. That was the first thing that caught my attention, not really his looks (although, you can’t miss his face in a crowd, he’s strikingly handsome). I was shocked by how a man, a banker for that matter, could be so selfless and so easily responsible for hundreds of customers at once not minding his own personal challenges or their faults. Just constantly going out of his way to put a smile on people’s faces; both old and young, without expecting any favours in return. That man is a rare breed, his kindness is next to none. I call him “Oba mi” because only kings have his kind of heart. The best part is that the heart keeps getting bigger everyday. I almost can’t get mad at him……

My madam! I call her “Emi Oga” (this means, Oga’s life..lol ) because she’s not just my heart beat, she’s my life. That woman has done so much for me in this life. I remember when I had a regular job that was well paying, I was living my life flamboyantly, like tomorrow doesn’t exist. I was always away from home; travelling for work-related trips for about 11 years. My wife forced me to save up some money, invest, start a business for her, acquire properties and develop them. I didn’t see an urgent need for those things. “I’ll buy a house when I’m ready, I don’t need to build a house,” I said to my wife but she insisted anyway and grudgingly, I obliged. When Covid hit, I lost my job, couldn’t afford to pay rent anymore, and all other businesses I attempted to venture into, crashed. Thank God for my wife; a prudent and virtuous woman! This woman held the fort on every front; she had built us two houses, kept the family afloat for the first two years post-Covid (because I was depressed), and has stayed resourceful at all times. In fact, the car I use for my ride-hailing business now, is her car. I bought it for her back then and she kept it well. Sister, make I no lie, I fit die for that woman

From the moment we met, my partner has been my biggest cheerleader. Whether I’m pursuing a new career opportunity, embarking on a creative project, or simply navigating the ups and downs of everyday life, he’s always there. Offering words of encouragement and unwavering support. His belief in me has given me the confidence to chase my dreams and conquer my fears, and for that, I am eternally grateful. Women don’t do or become much where I come from but my husband, he gives me wings to fly and still provides wind under my wings. That man is God sent walahi! If I come back to this world, I’ll choose Buba again and again.

My wife is beautiful in and out. Adaugo is a well-trained woman; very loving and respectful. Unlike most women her age (because our age difference is ten years), she is calm and collected. She gives me peace. When I hang out with my friends and hear tales of what they go through in the hands of their wives, I can’t help being grateful for the woman I have.

No matter what I do, even when I’m wrong, she will never raise her voice at me. She’s so patient with the kids too. I don’t know how I got this lucky. Can you imagine that we were introduced to each other? What you call matchmaking and look where we are today; happy home, beautiful children, ever beautiful wife, chai! My life just keeps getting better with that woman by my side.

What’s not to love about my man; his personality, his charisma, eloquence, accent, voice, his command of the English language, his looks, his perspective to life and issues, his physique, his laughter, his dress sense, his sense of humor, his goals, his accomplishments, his eyes and oh the way he looks at me! It is everything for me.

My man totally gets me and that for me, is a big flex. He knows what to say, when and how to say it. He shows up at the perfect time with the perfect gifts, so thoughtful. When I’m having a bad day, all I need to hear is his voice and it’s a good day again. In a crowded room, without talking, we communicate with eye glances at each other. We easily complete each other’s sentences.

Even when we’re apart, you can ask for our individual opinions on any issue and you can be sure to get very similar or exactly the same answers. We just connect on an unusually deep level that’s hard to express with words, let’s just say, I’ve found a soulmate in him and he says the same for me.

Interestingly, we have never had a fight or big argument. Even when I manage to cook up a misunderstanding, he’ll say, “ Bolanle, I value our relationship too much to subject it to a question of who’s right or wrong, I love you so much and I never want to hurt you. I’m sorry for……” Heyyyy, I’ve made it in this life!

At this point, I’m sure you’ve had a lot of “awwwn” moments reading these people’s stories. I can relate because I had the same experience listening to them. Truth is, good relationships exist. People may not make noise about it but they exist just like there are good guys and ladies out there. Maybe love is not so hard to find after all…..
