Are you aware that your skin is the largest organ in your body? It is that superhero organ that (looks simple yet complex and) covers your body’s entire(from head to toe) external surface and protects it whilst receiving the direct impact from external factors(like rain, sunshine, heat, cold, bites, stings, etc). To a large extent, it also indicates general wellbeing. When people are sick, you can tell from the look of their skin sometimes. Proper skincare isn’t just very important to our overall health, it is a must for a healthy, fresher, younger-looking and glowing (baby girl) skin.
If you’re like me, proper skincare might sound like a lot but I have taken the liberty to break it down to five basics every girl that wants to glow should know. You can build a skincare routine around these basics to pamper your skin
Here are five skin care basics you should never forget if you want to look your best always and they include.
Eating Healthy
This is the number one rule for a healthy and glowing skin. You are what you eat, literally. A healthy meal is everything for the body. When the body gets all the nourishment it needs, it always reflects on the skin. To get a great skin you would need to eat a lot of fruits and vegetables daily, especially carrots and tomatoes etc
Skin Cleansing
You should always start and end your day with skin cleansing. The skin is not only an organ or a thing of beauty but also the protector of the body. Cleansing your skin helps to take out the oil, dirt and bacteria buildup on your skin, leaving your pores free and reducing excess sebum. You need to consider your skin type, when choosing a cleanser for your skin.
If you have oily skin that’s prone to acne, you should consider getting a gel or foam cleanser that isn’t harsh but if you have dry or sensitive skin, you should consider getting a lotion or cream cleanser, as this would help to hydrate and soothe your skin. One rule of thumb when it comes to choosing cleansers, is to avoid cleansers with strong perfumes, colors and harsh chemicals like alcohol. These chemicals can upset your skin by drying out its moisture, irritating and causing your skin to secrete more oil. Ensure you wet your face with lukewarm water before applying the cleanser to your face, then gently massage into your skin (facial) in circular motions and rinse off using warm water as well.
Skin Exfoliation
Dead skin is sometimes invisible to the naked eye but it can prevent you from achieving your skin goals, regardless of the quality of products you use or the consistency of your skincare routine. This is why you need to always exfoliate your skin regularly to get rid of dead skin cells and other dirt clogging your pores, exposing your skin to properly absorb the products that will enhance its texture, appearance, tone, etc.
While exfoliating is important for a healthy and beautiful skin, the type of product you use and how often you do it, is equally as important. Look for exfoliating products that contain salicylic acid, fruit enzymes(this is particularly great for separating dead skin bonds), charcoal, oats, sugar and clay. These are great exfoliants and depending on your skin type, have little or no side effects.
Skin Toning
Nothing screams balanced skin pH like a good toner. Skin toning does a lot of good to the skin from restoring natural moisture to shrinking the skin pores, to clearing dark spots, to removing the dirt and excess oil from oily skin, to providing you with the even skin color and tone of your dreams.
You don’t want your skin to have two different colours as some people experience when they have a fair face and dark legs. This is because their skin isn’t even. Get a good toner with key ingredients like rose water, aloe vera, chamomile, witch hazel, cucumber and tea tree oil, depending on your skin type.
Skin Moisturizing
This involves applying a moisturizing cream to the skin to hydrate the skin, lock in moisture and leave it looking younger. Trust me this is the best thing you can do for your skin. It takes away wrinkles and gives your skin that glow that would leave heads turning.
A good moisturizer also improves your skin barrier function and this in turn protects your skin from external factors. Make a morning and evening routine out of this to maximize the beneficial effects of a good moisturizer and watch your skin glow like the morning sun.
One additional tip is to always wear sunscreen, especially if you live in Nigeria. This would protect your skin from the harsh ultraviolet rays of the sun and with the climate change due to global warming, girl protect your skin!
