I wasn’t so much of an Amala fan until a recent event made me discover my love for amala and ever since I’ve been relentless in my pursuit of Amala hotspots.

I’ll be honest, when it comes to Amala in Lagos, it’s hard to actually rate the best of the best because a lot of restaurants have carved a niche for themselves in this space and they are doing exceptionally well.

But when it comes to Amala hotspots, especially in Lagos, grab a seat and let me give you a ride.

In no particular order, here’s a list of my top 5 places to try Amala in Lagos.

Olaiya Foods and Catering Services, Surulere

When it comes to Amala that bangs in Lagos, Surulere seems to have gotten it right, You can confirm this by the amount of great Amala hotspots that began from or are currently located in that part of Lagos.

Olaiya’s Amala is a valid proof of my theory about Surulere. If you’re a lover of Amala and you’re resident in Lagos or maybe just visiting and you haven’t tried Amala at Olaiya, you might need to reorganize your (food) experience bucket list because Olaiya is everything they think they are.

Their Amala gives context to what they say about not judging a book by its cover. A plate of food that sends your taste buds on a blissful journey.

Their Amala looks quite small for a portion and the Gbegiri (yellow) soup might seem watery but you see that combo? It just works perfectly to give a wholesome taste you probably never anticipated. Try Olaiya and thank me later!

Iya Toyin Amala, Onipanu

Even food critics have certified Iya Toyin’s Amala as the bomb. The Amala is soft and succulent, the stew and Ewedu are just the perfect blend of flavor and spices -you probably won’t notice the absence of the yellow soup (Gbegiri). The meat is divine! Very soft and flavorful.

Iya Toyin’s Amala is better experienced than explained.

Amala Sky, Lekki

Amala Sky has a reputation that speaks for itself within and outside Lagos. They’ve also been in the business for a while now with outlets from Ibadan to Lagos Island. Everything about their Amala delicacy will keep you returning for more.

They also have other amazing delicacies. While you’re there for the Amala, you should definitely try their pounded yam and egusi or jollof rice. You won’t regret it.

Amala Shitta, Surulere

Here’s another banging Amala hotspot in Surulere. Amala Shitta has been delivering nothing short of tasty meals, especially Amala for over 40 years now. That should tell you something. The Amala is everything and more!

You should try it with your friends and in case your friends aren’t lovers of Amala, they can try the Ofada sauce with rice. They’ll thank you for it!

Yakoyo Abula Joint, Lekki

I definitely saved the best for the last! I personally believe that Yakoyo Amala is one of the best in Lagos state. This Yakoyo Amala saved my life. I could eat it everyday and not get tired of it.

The swallow is very soft and fluffy, the stew tastes like it was made at home (talk about value for money), the Gbegiri and Ewedu are just perfect. Just a taste of this meal would stay etched in your memory forever.

Oh, did I mention that it’s also very affordable? Don’t just take my word for it, try it and thank me later.
