Who doesn’t want skin as clear as glass, and fresh like Agege bread straight from the bakery? Skincare is quality self-care but with so many skincare products out there, choosing the right one can feel like a science experiment, filled with trials & errors.

But here’s the thing, It doesn’t have to be complicated because your skin is always talking. Sometimes it’s saying, “Thank you, bestie!” Other times, it’s screaming, “Help me! Help me!”

If you’ve been wondering whether your skincare products are working for you or against you, don’t worry, I’ve got you covered. Here are some things your skin might be trying to tell you.

1. Dry Skin: The Sahara Desert Effect 

Some ingredients in your skincare product may be making your skin cry out for help. A good moisturizer won’t leave your face feeling too dry.

For instance, Alcohol-based toners and harsh exfoliants remove your skin’s natural oils, leaving your skin tight, dry, and begging for hydration. 

Knowing this now, you can switch to better hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and ceramides. And if your cleanser feels like sandpaper, get a gentler one, your skin will thank you.

2. Oily Skin: More Oil Than Fresh Puff-Puff 

If your face is shining like freshly fried puff-puff by noon, your moisturizer might be too heavy.

Go for a lightweight, and gentle, hydrating cleanser. Oily skins also needs moisture,  just the right kind. Don’t fight your oily skin with harsh products.

3. Skin Irritation & Breakouts: The Red Flag 

Your skincare product might be the problem if your face suddenly feels hot like you washed it with atarodo. Ingredients like retinol and glycolic acid can cause temporary irritation. Preservatives, fragrances, and harsh chemicals can trigger full-blown reactions such as redness, itching, tiny bumps, or unexpected breakouts. 

The stress in Nigeria is already enough, don’t let your skin suffer too. Check your product’s ingredient list for alcohol, fragrance, and strong acids. Always do a patch-test, and if your skin keeps acting up, see a dermatologist. Your face deserves peace, it’s not Indaboski.

4. Skincare on ASUU Strike

You see that skincare product you’ve been using for months now, and your skin still doesn’t care about all your effort. The product is either doing the bare minimum or absolutely nothing just like our politicians.

Following skincare trends and picking skincare products just because an influencer swears by it might not work for your skin type.

Figure out your skin type. Is it oily, dry, combination, sensitive, or normal? And then choose products that actually meet its needs. Be patient, but don’t waste time. Some ingredients take a while, but if there’s no progress, it’s time to move on.

Congratulations, you’ve overworked your skin like a 9-to-5 worker stuck in Lagos traffic. Because you keep going for Instagram glow products that promise to make you shine in two days.  Now your skin is a mixture of light-skinned and melanin popping at the edges.

Stop mixing skincare products like you’re brewing Agbo, your skin is delicate. Please, take good care of it. 

Ask good beauticians (not Pelumi’s Glow) or a Dermatologist about your skin type and use registered, tested, and trusted products that actually work well with your skin.

Skincare isn’t about trends or what works for your favorite influencer with ring lights and good genes. It’s about understanding your skin, choosing the right products, and not forcing the vibes.
