As a child, I always thought that weddings were about love, family, and maybe a humble two-tier cake. Now, they’re about deciding between having your dream wedding or stacking your kitchen with foodstuff that will last at least 6 months

These days, a wedding can cost more than a decent car… except you can’t drive it to work the next day. And while “destination wedding” sounds like a childhood dream come true, your bank account might not agree.

The good news? You can have a beautiful, joy-filled wedding without draining your savings, sacrificing an internal organ or starting your marriage in debt.

Here’s how to make it happen.

1. Budget Like You Mean It (and Stick to It)

Couple budgeting for their wedding

Pinterest will have you thinking your wedding must look like a royal Netflix drama and yes, the pictures are lovely… but they also come with a “sell-your-kidney” price tag.

Before you start scrolling inspo boards or touring venues, set your maximum spend. Break it down: venue, food, attire, photography, decor, etc. Decide what you actually care about and cut the rest.

Remember, your wedding is one day. Your marriage? That’s for life.

2. Cut the Guest List Like You’re Cutting Onions

This is where the biggest savings happen. Every extra person means more food, more chairs, more money.

Invite only the people who are truly part of your life. Distant relatives who haven’t called you since 2015 will survive without tasting your jollof rice.

Yes, your parents may want “the whole of Nigeria” in attendance, but stand your ground. At the end of the day, it’s just you and your partner when the music stops.

3. Invest in the Photos

You can skip the extra dessert table, but don’t skip a good photographer.

The food will vanish. The flowers will wilt. But your photos? They’ll last forever!

Invest in someone who’ll capture the magic, because great pictures can make even a budget wedding look like a luxury affair.

4. Choose Your Date Like a Genius

Saturday weddings are basically “come one, come all”, even people you’ve never met will find a way to show up.

Pick a weekday. A Monday or Thursday means fewer people can attend (thanks to HR policies that don’t recognise your big day as a public holiday). Your guest list cuts itself automatically.

Bonus: you now have the perfect excuse for those not invited. “Ah, I knew you’d be at work, so I didn’t want to disturb you.”

5. DIY

Do it yourself but please know your limits. You are not YouTube-certified to bake a four-tier cake or sew a ball gown after watching two tutorials.

Stick to easy wins like making your own invitations with free design tools or arranging supermarket flowers into cute bouquets.

Small, achievable projects can save you serious money without adding unnecessary stress.

6. Dress Smart

Unless you plan to wear that ball gown to the office every Monday, you don’t need to blow your budget on a dress or suit you’ll wear once.

Check rental shops, thrift stores, sample sales, or even non-bridal dresses in white, cream, or blush. Same for suits, renting or buying second-hand can save a fortune.

If you really want a designer gown, save it for your vow renewal in a few years when you won’t have to survive on noodles for six months afterwards.

Your wedding is the starting point, not the finish line. In 30 years, you won’t care if you served steak or amala. What matters is that you were surrounded by love and not drowning in debt.

In this economy, a budget wedding isn’t “cheap”, it’s smart. Focus on what matters, get creative, and you’ll be shocked how magical a cost-conscious wedding can feel. Join the Finance 101 community on Fusion for more tips on saving costs and managing your money like a pro.
